The average driver may refer to the braking system as "the brakes." The term doesn't always suggest more than one part comprises the system. A thorough look at "the brakes" reveals many different parts come together to perform their duties. The brake pads create friction on the rotors, setting other effects into motion.
Friction slows the rotors down, and these spinning discs contribute to the wheels' motion. Once the brake pads put pressure and friction on the rotors, the wheels slow or cease moving. Brake pads rely on other parts to work, though. The pedal, cylinder, fluid, calipers, and lines all perform tasks to make the pads work.
Brake pads only work so long before they start to wear. Upon pressing down on the brake pedal, a driver may hear grinding or other noises, which indicate the brake pads may require service.
